Due to the localised effect we experience here in El Médano, you can roughly add another two-thirds to the wind strength given on Windguru to attain a more accurate figure of the conditions we are likely to have.

Wind Pattern

Boasting over 250 days of planing conditions (force four and above) a year, El Médano is Tenerife's sole windsurfing location and is well exposed to the influence of the Atlantic, offering some of the most consistent conditions found in the Canarian archipelago.

The most ideal wind direction is northeast, although the two bays work with any north in the wind, from northeast to northwest. The big telltale sign of whether the wind is coming is a high-pressure being in place over the Azores. If it is then the fringes of that high results in consistent thermal currents being deflected and accelerated around Teide, funnelling them along the east coast of Tenerife through the gap between the island and Gran Canaria. And since the Azores high is normally very stable, especially during the summer, do not be surprised if you get wind day after day!

On occasion we also play host to some south winds (especially during spring and autumn), producing some excellent flat-water freestyle and and freeride blasting conditions in South Bay. Very occasionally these winds combine with a south swell to produce epic starboard cross-offshore wave riding conditions...but only very occasionally.
